What's The Big Deal About Beyonce's Formation?

Beyonce. Beyonce. Beyonce. You've done it again and I'm sure this is only the beginning.

On February 6, 2016 Beyonce dropped a surprise music video for her new single "Formation" and as expected the girls went crazy. With the hype of the Superbowl and talks of new music ( and her 11 week hiatus from IG) I just knew in my heart that the Queen Bey was up to something.

Of course the song is dope as fuck, hood as fuck, sassy as fuck, and most importantly black as fuck. And honey I live for it. In my opinion the imagery is amazing. It's everything that I want out of a visual experience. The costumes are nothing less than worthy as they grace the immaculate canvas of curves  that is Beyonce. That blonde braided 52 inch lace wig  represents the distance between you and Beyonce's crown. She's giving you simple cute choreography so you can have it down by the halftime show. There's 365 curly Afros to remind the world that there isn't a day that black girls aren't winning and yet, some of ya'll are still mad.

Formation is so much more for the black community. Especially for black women. How many songs do you hear in a day that sexualize us, demean our value, exploit our beauty, and misrepresents our culture sung by men or white people? Too many to count. How many songs do you hear in a day that gives us the right to express our sexuality, assert our power and blackness, speak up for our rights while celebrating ourselves as black women? not enough. You'll gladly blast and twerk to Future and his trap songs (which I also enjoy), but when some little pretty light skinned girl gives you music packaged the same way it becomes a problem.

Some people argue that it's not Beyonce but her vulgar lyrics like:

"When he fuck me good I take his ass to Red Lobster, cause I slay

If he hit it right, I might take him on a flight on my chopper, cause I slay"

Well, I'd take you seriously except for the fact that you'll gladly sing along to songs like  "Make it nasty" by Tyga and "Freak Hoe" by Future and you don't think twice about twerking to songs like "Back that azz up" by Juvenile or "Pop That" by French Montana. Still somehow when a woman not only expresses that she enjoys pleasurable sex, but she will also reward a man if he delivers with dinner, private flights, and shopping sprees it's just too much for your ears. Oh is it because for generations society tells us that women have a sexual responsibility to please not to seek pleasure?

Some argue that Beyonce is too cocky and she needs to humble herself. We'll that's ironic coming from a self obsessed, curated, selfie taking generation. You want empowerment but not from someone who has power and influence and certainly not from a woman. That would just tip the whole world off it's axis huh? You have a problem referring to another woman as a Queen simply because you haven't settled into your own thrown. The sight of another woman's crown somehow makes you believe that you don't possess one of your own or that her graciousness overshadows yours. Understand that Beyonce being Beyonce takes nothing away from you. If we all could find our light and shine that bitch as bright as she does imagine what the world could be for little black girls.

It always amazes me and angers me when I see other black women attack Beyonce for the very thing that makes us the same. You're too busy being insecure and self centered to realize this is not just about you or about Bey. It's about us. She is one of the few women who speaks for us, represents us, and does it so gallantly! There's a bigger picture here and I think that it's time you open your eyes. You don't have to like it but you should most definitely respect it. Beyonce is winning the race for us. Say Thank You.

  6. This is such a great read and I agree 100%. We have very few WOC to represent us in a positive way and she does such a great job doing so. I also love how you addressed the fact that men are able to do things like this and more with little to no backlash from our community. Such a crazy double standard if you ask me.

    Cheers!
